The NSW government has granted Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) North an 18-month extension, allowing the coal mine to continue operating until December 2026. The approval comes just two months before the mine’s previous approvals were set to expire and is seen as crucial for preserving over 1,500 jobs. Operated by a Glencore-Yancoal joint venture, HVO is also seeking long-term approvals through its Continuation Project, aiming to extend mining until 2050. While welcomed by local officials, the decision drew criticism from environmental groups concerned about emissions and the delayed transition to cleaner energy sources.
